Celebrate International School Meals Day!

Did you know that Scotland has played a key role in International School Meals Day since it began in 2013?

This year’s theme is celebrating culture through food. Food has been at the heart of every human culture and civilisation since prehistoric times, and it’s a wonderful, experiential context through which to explore the fascinating variety of customs, traditions and cultures past and present, that have shaped human society near and far for centuries.

The amazing diversity of human food culture can be a rich source of learning across every area of Curriculum for Excellence, and an ideal way to bring your school and its wider community closer together. Why not start by exploring and investigating the food cultures across your school community, and the food culture in your own dining hall? Parents, grandparents, and local community members will have a wealth of stories to share too. Perhaps you could ask your school catering staff to prepare a special meal to celebrate the day. Or why not pick a particular food culture and explore the customs, music, foods and stories that accompany it?

Whatever you decide to do, have fun, and be sure to share your International School Meals stories here on the Food for Life Scotland website, as well as sending or Tweeting your pictures to the ISMD team. Have a look at their website for more ideas and inspiration.

 Bon appetit!
