Where does our honey come from?

by Nicola Clelland, Aberhill Primary School

As part of our healthy breakfast club the children have been learning about healthy food choices. Many of the children were interested in trying honey as an alternative sweetner, and some have gone home and approached their own parents about using honey as an alternative. The children knew the basic fact about 'bees making the honey' but not much more. So building on their enthusiasm, we set a family homework task finding out about where honey came from, the processes involved in supplying and selling it, and what the benefits of eating honey were on our own bodies. This was well received by the children and parents. Later on this month the children will be hosting a healthy breakfast event, where the parents will get a chance to taste their children's honey pancakes and homemade bread and butter (menu prepared and delivered by the pupils.)
