Traditional Scottish oatcakes in North Ayrshire
Last week Sammi, Kirsten and Matt (from Food for Life) came along to the school to deliver an oatcake workshop to the P3 and P4 pupils. The children worked in small groups to make their own oatcakes. They found out how oats are grown nowadays and how they were grown in the past, and they then got to grind oats to make their own oatmeal. They followed a traditional Scottish recipe and kneaded the mixture. Whilst the oatcakes were cooking, the P4 children received a talk about different cheeses while the P3 children were taught some Scottish dancing. The children thoroughly enjoyed this experience and there was a delicious smell in the school! Once the oatcakes were cooked the children got to eat them - with some traditional Scottish cheese!
