Our school hens
The hens arrived in February and we investigated all about chickens before they arrived, including the difference between caged and free-range hens, the health benefits of eggs, and the costs of keeping hens. We named all of the hens with a Star Wars theme:
Obi Wan Kentucky
and Cluck Vader!
The P5 pupils are the main caretakers for our hens and they have a rota in place to collect eggs in the morning and clean out the run every Friday. There's also a rota for parents to take care of then over the weekend. Our hens are really happy, laying one egg every day! Carol in our school kitchen has been making egg mayo sandwiches and baking delicious treats with the eggs we've collected.
The hen run can be moved around to different areas in our schoolyard so that they have access to new 'pasture' regularly. We're excited to learn more about our feathered friends!
