Nurturing Nature at Dumfries House Walled Garden

Pupils from Cumnock Academy Supported Learning Centre have worked tirelessly to create and nurture their own plot within Dumfries House Estate Walled Garden. As part of our Award winning Outdoor Education programme, we have strived to provide high quality learning experiences which help to embed growing food to harvesting into the curriculum.  Outdoor Learning sessions have allowed pupils to experience learning outwith the classroom and meet experiences and outcomes of a Curriculum for Excellence within the garden.  

Our ethos of Sow, Grow, Nurture, Harvest, Serve is now fully embedded within our Centre.  Our recipes from our organically grown vegetables have included tasty potato and leek soup, beetroot muffins, onion chutney, bramble jelly and carrot cake to name a few of our successful products.  We have then served these in our monthly cafe, the SHANARRI Shack.  Our products have proved very popular and we have sold these in our cafe and at Christmas, Easter and Summer events throughout the year.  This has enabled us to sustain our Nurture provision within school as feeding forty hungry young people per week can be very expensive.  Our young people have learned about sustainability through our kitchen garden and are becoming enthusiastic, green fingered gardeners themselves.
