Edinburgh care home residents visit East Lothian organic farm
Edinburgh's Inch View Care Home residents and staff enjoyed an outing to Chapel Farm in East Lothian in early February.
Enjoying a brief respite from the stormy weather, they saw how Graham Elder and his team at Chapel Farm sort, grade and pack the organic vegetables that end up in box schemes, restaurants and store shelves across Scotland.
The trip was of special interest to the residents because they have recently started enjoying Chapel Farm’s organic produce for themselves, as part of the home’s efforts to achieve a Silver Food for Life Catering Mark (it already holds the Bronze award). The home’s senior cook took part in the visit and said she finds the organic produce well-priced and great to cook with.
The vegetables are supplied by Graham through City of Edinburgh Council’s contracted supplier, George Anderson & Sons, proving that big public sector contracts needn’t prohibit smaller supplier caterer relationships.
